Ductless system diagnostics
Start With the Head, Zone, and Exact Symptom
A ductless system can fail at one indoor head, across several zones, or at the shared outdoor unit. That distinction matters. We begin with the reported behavior, the affected rooms, the remote or wall controller, and any error code before testing accessible indoor and outdoor components.
Share whether the problem affects heating, cooling, or both; whether other heads still operate; and whether the issue began after a power interruption, cleaning, construction, or a long idle period. These details make the diagnostic visit more focused without assuming a cause before the equipment is checked.
Mini-Split Problems We Diagnose
Similar symptoms can come from controls, airflow, drainage, refrigeration, or power. Testing is used to separate them.
Comfort and Airflow Symptoms
A head that runs without changing room temperature can involve a dirty filter or coil, fan operation, temperature sensing, mode settings, a refrigeration problem, or capacity conditions outside the indoor unit itself.
- no cooling or no heating
- weak or intermittent airflow
- one zone underperforming
- frequent starts, stops, or delayed response
Leaks, Codes, and Unusual Operation
Water at an indoor head is not automatically a refrigerant leak. Condensate drainage, installation pitch, frozen surfaces, pumps, and line-set conditions are evaluated separately from electrical or communication faults.
- water dripping from an indoor head
- ice on accessible equipment or piping
- error codes or blinking indicators
- buzzing, rattling, odor, or outdoor-unit noise
What Happens During Diagnosis
- We confirm which heads and modes are affected, reproduce the symptom when safe, and record visible error information before resetting controls.
- The technician checks accessible filters, airflow, coils, drainage, sensors, wiring, communication paths, line-set conditions, and outdoor-unit operation as the symptom requires.
- Findings are narrowed to the failed function. Access limitations, intermittent faults, and manufacturer-specific testing requirements are explained instead of hidden.
- You receive the finding and the repair price before approved work begins. Unrelated zones or concealed building conditions remain outside the repair boundary unless added to the scope.
When to Turn a Mini-Split Off
Stop the system if water is reaching electrical components, you see damaged wiring or smoke, the unit is overheating, or a breaker repeatedly trips. Do not open energized covers, insert tools into a fan, or handle refrigerant piping. If an indoor head is leaking, protect the area below only when it is safe and leave the equipment off until it can be evaluated.

Mini-Split Repair FAQ
Why is only one mini-split head not working?
A single-zone symptom can involve that head's power, controls, sensor, fan, drainage, or communication with the outdoor unit. Testing is needed because other heads operating normally does not identify the failed part by itself.
Can you diagnose a mini-split error code?
Yes. Save the exact code and avoid repeatedly clearing it. A code points toward a test path, but it does not always prove which component failed.
Why is water dripping from the indoor unit?
Possible causes include a restricted or disconnected drain, drain-pump trouble, improper pitch, coil icing, or another condensate condition. Turn the unit off if water can reach electrical equipment or finished surfaces.
Is the $99 service call part of the repair price?
Yes. When you approve the repair, the $99 service-call charge is applied toward the total repair price. If no repair is approved, the service-call charge remains payable.
